In 1849 the City of St. Louis was brought to its knees by not just one disaster, but two! Beginning the night of May 17th a fire that none had ever seen the likes of before burned half of what was then a city of 30 square blocks. But, that was not all. The City at that time was already in the early stages of the worst cholera epidemic it had or ever would witness; killing nearly 10% of its' population.
