Description

Ulysses S. Grant holds the strange distinction of being the last of 12 presidents in U.S. history to have been an enslaver. While much is lost to history, we know roughly 28 names of enslaved persons who lived at White Haven, an 850-acre plantation owned by Grant’s father-in-law. Join us and hear what has been discovered about the life of William Jones, an enslaved man who Grant freed. Little is known about others, but Nick Sacco will share the interesting stories his research has yielded. He also will discuss the upbringing of Grant’s wife Julia Dent Grant at White Haven and her views on slavery as expressed in her personal memoirs.
