It is a story with which many of us are quite familiar. The Nativity story summons immediate images in our minds of Mary, Joseph, Jesus, a manger, a star, some shepherds and kings and maybe a few donkeys. However, throughout the history of European painting, generations of artists have brought the story to life in ways that reflect the conventions of their time as well as the creative spirit seeking timeless interpretation.
