Description
Improvisation on a melody in jazz requires two special bodies of knowledge. First, an understanding of how to determine what notes are available to the player, and next a knowledge on how to use those notes in performance settings. There is a third need, too. Most musicians read music, and it can be hard but it is critically important for jazz musicians to become accustomed to play by ear. In this class we will focus on the theoretical structure of music and on the application of that theory. A jazz musician needs both. You can't have chickens without eggs, but you can't have eggs without chickens.
