Description

President George Washington saw the need to raise federal troops and deploy them to put down domestic violence.  In the first such example in American History, President George Washington donned his Revolutionary War uniform and was prepared to act as Commander-in-Chief in the field.  By his side was his Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, acting temporarily as the Secretary of War. Lin-Manuel Miranda brought this little-known episode to our attention when he had Thomas Jefferson rap, “Look, when Britain taxed our tea, we got frisky. Imagine what gon’ happen when you try to tax our whisky.” The responses to the whiskey tax varied from peaceful civil disobedience to violent insurrection. This challenge to government authority tested the viability of the new U. S. Government. Come hear this story unfold and appreciate the fragility of that government.
