This class traces the history of the Russian Orthodox Church from its adoption of Christianity from Byzantium in 988 to the present day. We will explore how Orthodoxy shaped Russian culture, art, and national identity through icons, architecture, music, and literature. The session also examines the Church’s evolving relationship with political power, from the rise of Moscow to the Soviet era and contemporary Russia, highlighting its role in modern geopolitical and cultural tensions.
