This class examines key questions at the heart of the American Revolution. Were its leaders radical visionaries seeking to build a new society, or elites protecting their own status? How could a nation founded on equality allow slavery to continue? Through exploring the goals, contradictions, and compromises of the era, we will consider whether the founding fathers were idealists, realists, or both—and how their choices shaped the new democratic nation.
