Description

In this lecture, we trace a nation torn apart by the Civil War, and the even greater challenge of stitching itself back together. We explore the war’s fierce collision of armies and ideals, then move into its tense aftermath, when battlefield victory gave way to bitter struggles in Congress, across the South, and in the daily lives of millions. It’s the story of freedom won, but never secure, of newly freed African Americans fighting for rights and dignity, and of fierce resistance determined to stop them.
