Description

The first lady of the United States is the title held by the hostess of the White House, usually, but not always, the president’s wife. Although the first lady’s role has never been codified or officially defined, she figures prominently in U.S. political and social life. The position of the first lady is not elected and carries only ceremonial duties. Nonetheless, first ladies have held a highly visible position in American society. The role of the first lady has evolved over the centuries. After women got the right to vote in 1920, first ladies took on more active political positions, especially in campaigns. This program will explore ten of these women.
