Description
Mass social movements are usually considered a recent phenomenon corresponding to mass politics, mass media, and modern ideologies. This class challenges that assumption by demonstrating the existence and power of mass social movements from ancient times to the present. In addition to historical background, this class will offer opportunities for participants to analyze historical documents and to discuss continuities between past and present. In addition to the Jewish Revolt in Palestine of the first century CE and Black Lives Matter, we’ll touch on the English peasants rebellion of 1381, the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804), and the West Virginia Mine wars of 1920-21.
