Description

In the film “The Monuments Men” (2014), a character named Frank Stokes says, “You can wipe out an entire generation, you can burn their homes to the ground and show how they’ll still find their way back. But if you destroy their history, you destroy their achievements, and it’s as if they never existed.” When considering the connection between history and culture, Pulitzer Prize winner Alice Walker spoke about the role of Storytelling. Her quote: “Storytelling is how we survive when there’s no food; the story feeds something, the spirit, the imagination. I can’t imagine life without stories, stories from my parents, my culture.” Whether telling stories physically in person or through the lens of filmmakers, this class invites participants to share their experiences in connecting culture and history through films, television programs, YouTube videos, and other creative outlets. This class will also show how social justice can bridge culture and history.
