What is the historical and religious context in first century Israel that produced Jesus of Nazareth? The first century of the common era was a time of political and religious upheaval in Israel. Jewish people had been subjected to foreign domination for the better part of 600 years and were now under the oppressive rule of the Roman Empire. As a result, expectations were high.
